Fluid Has A New Address! 1644 S.E. Clatsop Street

Fluid has recently moved to 1644 S.E. Clatsop Street Portland, Oregon 97202.

I must admit initially I thought Clatsop was a strange sounding word (and still am not sure if I am pronouncing it correctly) then I discovered the history. Fort Clatsop is named for a local Indian tribe who were friendly to Lewis and Clark.

If you have not visited the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park I highly recommend it!

The park is just past Astoria. This area is loaded with attractions including the Peter Iredale Shipwreck (see photo below of yours truly striking a pose).

And here are a few more shots from the Astoria area, the south jetties at Ft. Stevens:

The April Five Exercises

April Five – The Crescent Lunge

Each month I assign my clients five moves that they are to do every day. Just one minute per move and you don’t even have to do them all at once! Step back into a crescent lunge while you are waiting for your coffee (or tea) to brew. As you are getting into bed hold your bow pose. You get the idea.

I have added a few photos to jog your memory.

Here we start with the Crescent Lunge.

Crescent Lunge Anne

Also called “High lunge” this move should feel very different than your Warrior II.

Stand near a wall if needed for balance. Step left foot back in to a lunge with left heel off the ground. Track your right knee over your middle toes. Lift up into a back bend.

If this feels uncomfortable, lower your back knee, and back off of the back bend.

January Five Exercises – Downward Facing Dog – Adho Mukha Svanasana

Have you been doing your five this month? Here is one of them – Downward Facing Dog. Want to get lots of bang for your buck? This is the move for you. Shoulder and hip opener, spine and hamstring stretch, core strength, a little bit of everything! This move energizes your brain and may help relieve depression, stress and insomnia and improve digestion.

Here is the version I recommend for those new to yoga, or if you have tight hamstrings or shoulders.

Down Dog .modified.

See how my knees and elbows are bent? I have space between my ear and shoulder and my back is long.

This version requires more strength and flexibility:

Down Dog Jan 2014

Let’s try it together:

  • Start from hands and knees or a plank.
  • Press hands and feet into the mat and send your tail (sitz bones) to the ceiling.
  • Imagine you are pulling the mat apart.
  • Hold for one minute (if you are able to do so without pain).

Start with one minute today and see if you can increase your time held to two or three minutes by the end of January (please see safety precautions below…)
