Are You Communicating Effectively?

Quick update since I posted this – I’ve contacted Kate and she has agreed to be our next interviewee!!! Log into Zoom this Saturday August 22nd at noon as we chat live with Kate! Use this ID: 5037054762.

Apparently the theme for me this week is communication. On Tuesday I watched an excellent PSU lunch and learn webinar with Leeza Steindorf, on Nonviolent Communication. Then today I came across Kate Hanley’s podcast How To Be A Better Person, and the episode – Confrontation Nation: We Can’t All Be Right. The common thread I noticed was being curious, and letting go of the idea that one of us is right and one of us is wrong.

Uh oh, this ain’t going well.

Have you had a conversation with someone who disagreed with you, and if so how did it go? Were you listening to understand, or waiting for your turn to speak (or yell!) at the person?

While I have yet to master these concepts, I truly believe in their power, and am continuing to practice using them to help me improve my communication skills.

This week I challenge you to think of someone you have a difficult time communicating with. Can you put yourself in this person’s shoes, to see where they are coming from, hear them, and feel what they are feeling? Message me if you would like a practice buddy.

Now this is a happy couple!

If you’d like the PSU NVC webinar slides, email me and I will send you the file. anne@fluidportland.com

Interview with Rachel From Dance With Joy!

Have you met Rachel? If so, you would surely remember. She is a positive ray of sunshine, beaming with love! I followed her around her studio (which was hard, she never stops moving!). We chatted about her summer kids camps, and her online and in person dance lessons.

Watch this video to see how she continues to support her community, and is keeping everyone safe. We even do an impromptu dance lesson at the end!

We start downstairs where she shows us some of the kids camp activities, then head to the upstairs studio around the 7 minute mark, and our dance lesson start at about the 14 minute mark.

P.s. this is my first attempt at filming, and editing an on site video! While it may not be the slickest production value ever you’ve ever seen, I can now add video editing to the things I’ve learned during the pandemic! Yay!

meditation workshop

Meditation Workshop Saturday August 1st At Noon

Reduce anxiety, calm your nervous system, and learn easy to use self soothing techniques that help you get control of your breath and your thoughts. Often, we can’t control what’s going on in the world, but we can control how we react to it. A good place to start is with your breath. If I am feeling stressed, taking a big deep breath buys me some time, and gives me some space to figure out my next move, and think about what I should (or shouldn’t) say.

What does stress feel like in your body? Does your stomach ache, do your eyes dart around, does your heart race, does your jaw tighten up? Noticing body sensations is another great step in taking control of your body and mind.

Join me Saturday August 1st at noon as safely and gently explore these sensations, and play with breathing techniques and short guided meditations. This is a great workshop for those new to meditation, or those of you experiencing sleep issues (or, anybody feeling stressed to the max right now).

Live Interview with Michelle Rork of the Moreland Farmers Market

Stone fruits, berries, whats new at the farmers market this week? Recently, we spoke with Michelle Rork, current president of the Moreland Farmers Market board of directors. She updated us on the new location (just one block north of Bybee, on SE Glenwood and 14th), and other goings on at the market. The market is open Wednesdays 2-6 pm now thru October.

From Michelle: We officially became a nonprofit this spring! We are now offering online ordering, and our hunger reduction/nutrition education programs are going strong. We are doubling SNAP money up to $10, we started our senior program again this month, and we are offering to-go kids activities.

Martin, of Happiest Healthy Fitness Coaching, Interviews Anne!

These past few months, I have found so much joy in connecting with local people via weekly interviews! We’ve learned about everything from how to improve your internet speed, and lower your car insurance bill, to how to care for your skin. Laura showed us Qi gong exercises and hand mudras, Alice and I discussed trail running with or without a mask. We talked mental health strategies with my business coach Heather Stewart (maintaining structure during uncertain times), and Julia AKA The Unclutter Coach, and Elliot (threatened mindset vs. challenged mindset).

This week, the tables have turned, and Martin interviewed me! Check out Martin Rasmussen’s podcasts on his Happiest Healthiest website where he talks with local fitness professionals. Click here to learn about how I got my start, and how my business has changed over the past few months. We talk about why I encourage the movement + massage concept, both for me, and my clients. Also, zoom classes, injury free personal training, my “back” story, “The Five”, and my trademarked R.O.S.S. plan.

We discuss my ideal client, and what I do to keep my body and mind feeling good. I share a sweet success story about a client who completely changed his body composition by cleaning up his diet, and adding strength work.

Listen all the way to the end to find out my favorite (and least favorite) exercise, and whether I’m a cat person or a dog person. This is an audio recording, so you can listen as you would a podcast, while you are out for a walk, in your car, while you are folding laundry, or whatever you are up to this weekend.
